9-channel video and sound installation
film loops, length variable
2018

Nine monitors show shimmering, blurred videos. They are moving images of lights, the origin of most of which is not discernible. The lights appear in different colors, sizes and shapes. By zooming in sharply, they blur into clouds of pixels. Swaying movements make these lights tremble. A restless hand meets a moving light. The light beam comes closer, is enlarged and abstracted. The images are accompanied by sounds. They are background noises of different origin. Sometimes it is the sound of the sea, sometimes a violin. They sound in different volumes, frequencies and timbres. The sounds come closer, move away or blend. Structures emerge that form autonomous landscapes.
The footage shown is from the late 1990s and early 2000s, when my father spent a lot of time filming everyday moments. While digitizing these miniDV tapes, I kept noticing scenes that showed abstract points of light. The light sources appeared repeatedly and over a period of years between everyday shots. Apparently they exerted a certain fascination on my father. For example, he was filming us playing on the beach in the evening when he suddenly panned to the moon and, fascinated by the radiant light, zoomed in as far as he could.
