One And Many Flutes
Modular structure with flutes made of steel tubes
Size and length variable
Het Bos (BE), 2025
One And Many Flutes is a modular installation made of steel tubes that spreads rhizomatically through space and functions as a setting for collective performances. The structure itself forms a polyphonic flute, activated through mouthpieces drilled along various parts.
Comparable to a deconstructed transverse flute divided among several players, the encounter between the performers creates a collective, fragmented composition that is experienced as an acoustic unit and makes the close connection between breath, sound, and gesture tangible. In order to produce sounds, the performers must adopt vertical, horizontal, and twisted postures.
Central to the work is an interest in exploring moments of transition—in particular, between instrument and orchestra, between tone and melody, and between individual and collective. Where air is inhaled, exhaled, held, interrupted, or prolonged, sound becomes sculpturally tangible in space.
